Magna Carta, the tallest spire in Britain and how to get there from a cruise, an airport or London.

Salisbury Cathedral is the heart of the city and one of the finest medieval buildings in England. Whether you are visiting for a day, arriving on a cruise or coming to a service or concert, here is what to see and how to get there without worrying about driving or parking.

Why visit Salisbury Cathedral

The tallest spire in Britain, at 123 metres (404 feet), visible for miles across the Wiltshire countryside.

Magna Carta: the cathedral’s Chapter House displays one of the four surviving original copies of the 1215 charter.

The Cathedral Close, the largest in Britain, with historic houses and lawns that are a pleasure to walk around.

A medieval clock dating from around 1386, often described as the oldest working mechanical clock in the world.

Opening times, guided tower tours and ticket prices are set by the cathedral and change through the year, so please check the cathedral’s own website before you travel.

How long to allow

Allow at least an hour inside the cathedral and the Chapter House, and another half hour to walk around the Close. With lunch in the city, two hours is comfortable. If you are coming from a Southampton cruise, the whole trip takes about half a day; combined with Stonehenge it fits easily into a six-hour private tour.

Services, concerts and seasonal events

Throughout the year, and especially around Advent and Christmas, the cathedral hosts services, carol concerts and special events that draw visitors from across Wiltshire, Hampshire and Dorset. Evening events often finish after the last convenient bus or train, which is where a pre-booked return journey helps: your driver collects you at the agreed time and takes you home.

Getting to the cathedral with Travel Connect

From home or your hotel: pre-booked private hire to and from the Cathedral Close, including evening returns after services and concerts.

From Southampton cruise terminals: our Stonehenge & Salisbury tour (6 hours, from £595 per vehicle including VAT) includes time in Salisbury and the cathedral area.

From airports and London: fixed-price airport transfers to Salisbury, or a private day tour from London.

Weddings and special occasions: our chauffeur service plans the day around your timings.

Make a day of it: the cathedral and Stonehenge

Stonehenge is only around 10 miles from the city, so the two are easy to combine in one day. Our guide to Stonehenge and Salisbury from London or a Southampton cruise explains how, and all our itineraries are on the private tours page.

Stonehenge & Salisbury Cathedral from London or a Southampton Cruise

What to expect, how long it takes and private tour prices per vehicle.

Stonehenge and Salisbury Cathedral are two of the most visited sights in England, and they are only half an hour apart. Most visitors come either from London or from a cruise ship in Southampton. Here is how to see both in one day, how long to allow and how a private tour with Travel Connect works from each starting point.

How far is Stonehenge from Salisbury?

The Stonehenge visitor centre is about 10 miles north of Salisbury city centre, usually a 20 to 25 minute drive. From the visitor centre, a shuttle or a walk of around 1.5 miles takes you to the stone circle itself.

How long to allow

Most visitors spend two to three hours at Stonehenge, including the exhibition, the reconstructed Neolithic houses and the walk around the stones. With the journey there and back, a half-day is comfortable.

Tickets

Stonehenge is run by English Heritage and entry is by timed ticket. At the time of writing (October 2026) adult tickets are £27.20 when booked online and £32.00 on the day, and children aged 5 to 17 are £17.20. Booking online in advance is cheaper and guarantees your entry time. Entry tickets are not included in our tour prices.

From a Southampton cruise: Stonehenge and Salisbury shore excursion

Stonehenge is around 35 miles from the Southampton cruise terminals, roughly an hour by road. On a private shore excursion your driver meets you at the terminal, takes you to Stonehenge and then into Salisbury for the cathedral and the Close, and brings you back to the ship with time to spare before all-aboard. Because the vehicle is yours for the day, there is no waiting for other passengers.

Stonehenge & Salisbury from Southampton cruise terminal (6 hours): from £595 per vehicle.

End of your cruise: terminal to Heathrow via Stonehenge (6 hours): from £595 per vehicle, with your luggage in the car all day.

Only need to get to or from the ship? We also run fixed-price Salisbury to Southampton cruise terminal transfers from £70 per vehicle.

From London: a private day trip to Stonehenge and Salisbury

Stonehenge is about 90 miles from central London, around two to two and a half hours by road. A private day trip collects you from your London hotel, visits Stonehenge and Salisbury Cathedral at your own pace and returns you to your door, without the fixed timetable of a coach tour.

Stonehenge & Salisbury from London (11 hours): from £1,045 per vehicle.

Already in Salisbury?

Stonehenge half-day tour from Salisbury (3 hours): from £315.

Stonehenge, Salisbury & Avebury (8 hours): from £765.

Stonehenge & Bath (9 hours): from £875.

All prices are per vehicle and include VAT, for an executive saloon with up to three passengers; larger vehicles for up to seven passengers are available. Stonehenge entry tickets are not included. Full details are on our private tours page.

What to expect on the day

Every tour is private and planned around you, so the timings below are only an example. Your driver adjusts the day to your Stonehenge entry time, your interests and, for cruise passengers, your all-aboard time.

Example day from a Southampton cruise (6 hours)

Morning: your driver meets you at the cruise terminal with a name board and helps with any bags.

About 1 hour: drive across the Hampshire and Wiltshire countryside to Stonehenge.

About 2 hours at Stonehenge: the visitor centre exhibition, the Neolithic houses and the walk or shuttle to the stones.

About 30 minutes: drive into Salisbury.

About 1.5 hours in Salisbury: the cathedral, Magna Carta and the Close, with time for a coffee or lunch.

About 45 minutes: back to the ship, comfortably before all-aboard.

Example day trip from London (11 hours)

Early morning: collection from your London hotel or home.

About 2 to 2.5 hours: drive west to Stonehenge, with a comfort stop if you wish.

About 2 hours at Stonehenge.

About 2 hours in Salisbury: lunch, the cathedral and the Close.

About 2.5 hours: return to your London address in the early evening.

Your driver stays with you all day, so you can leave coats and shopping in the vehicle, and there is no group to wait for.

Salisbury Cathedral: what not to miss

Salisbury Cathedral has the tallest spire in Britain, one of the four surviving original copies of the 1215 Magna Carta and the largest cathedral close in the country. Allow at least an hour; our Salisbury Cathedral visitor guide has more.

Tips for your visit

Book your Stonehenge entry time first, then book your tour around it. Cruise passengers: tell us your all-aboard time and we plan the day back from it.

Wear comfortable shoes and bring a waterproof layer: the site is open grassland and very exposed.

Early morning and late afternoon slots are usually quieter.

Whether you are planning a wedding, collecting a client from the airport or taking guests to Goodwood, a chauffeur turns the journey into the easy part of the day. Here is what a chauffeur service in Salisbury and Wiltshire involves, what it is used for and how to book one with Travel Connect.

What a chauffeur service includes

A chauffeur service is pre-booked, door-to-door travel in an executive vehicle with a professional driver who stays focused on your schedule. Unlike a vehicle you hail on the day, the journey is planned in advance: the collection time, the route, any waiting time and the return are all agreed before you travel, so there are no surprises on the day.

Travel Connect is operated by Travel Connect Tours Ltd, a private hire operator licensed by Wiltshire Council (licence PHOPS2272). Every journey is carried out by a licensed driver in a licensed vehicle.

Our executive vehicles

BMW 7 Series, Mercedes E-Class or Audi A6 for executive journeys of up to three passengers.

Mercedes V-Class when you need more room for passengers and luggage, for example for a family, a wedding party or a small corporate group.

Wedding chauffeur in Salisbury

On a wedding day the timings matter more than on any other day. A chauffeur can take the bride or groom to the ceremony, move close family between the church or venue and the reception, and bring guests home safely at the end of the evening. Because everything is planned in advance, you can share one itinerary with us and stop thinking about who is driving whom.

Salisbury and the surrounding villages have many popular ceremony and reception venues. Tell us the addresses and times when you request a quote and we will plan the day around them.

Business and corporate travel

For meetings, roadshows and client visits, a chauffeur lets you work, take calls or prepare between appointments. We can plan multi-stop days across the UK, as well as airport collections for visiting clients and colleagues.

Events: Goodwood, Silverstone and Farnborough

Major events are where a chauffeur really earns its place: no parking to find, no queue to leave the car park on your own, and a vehicle waiting at the agreed point when you are ready to go. We provide pre-booked travel for Goodwood events, Formula 1 at Silverstone and the Farnborough International Airshow, for individuals, hospitality guests and corporate groups.

Airports and private aviation

We collect from and drive to all the main UK airports, including Heathrow, Gatwick, Bristol, Southampton and Bournemouth, with fixed prices shown on our airport transfer page. For private flights we also provide discreet transfers to and from private airports, business aviation centres and FBO terminals, planned around your flight schedule.

Long-distance journeys

If you would rather not drive yourself to London, the Cotswolds or the other end of the country, a chauffeur takes you door to door in comfort, with stops planned around you.

How to book a chauffeur

Send us the date, the collection and drop-off addresses, the times and the number of passengers. You can do this through our online booking page, by phone on 01722 480479 or by email at office@travel-connect.co.uk.

We confirm the vehicle, the itinerary and the price before you travel.

On the day, your chauffeur arrives at the agreed time and place.

Every chauffeur booking is quoted individually, because it depends on the hours, the distance and the vehicle. See our chauffeur service page for more about what we offer, or request a quote online.
